The Price Board in Dollars
At roughly $1.30/£: mid-range hotel $150-240/night (Edinburgh higher in August); pub lunch $18-25; quality dinner $40-65; a pint $6-8; specialty coffee $5; castle entry $16-28; distillery tour $30-70; the famous Jacobite steam train $85 return. Daily budgets, per person excluding hotels: careful $60-80, comfortable $100-140, indulgent $200+. The pleasant surprises: museums including the National Museum of Scotland are FREE, tap water is always free and offered, and portion sizes mean shared starters go further than Americans expect.
Tipping: Unlearn Your Instincts
The single biggest adjustment for Americans: tipping here is modest and genuinely optional. Restaurants: 10% for good table service (check the bill — a 'service charge' may already be included; never double-tip). Pubs: zero — you order at the bar; 'and one for yourself' buys the bartender a drink if you're feeling generous. Taxis: round up. Hotels: $2-3 per bag if you wish. Tour driver-guides: never expected, warmly received — guests who loved a multi-day journey sometimes give 5-10%, and some give none; both are completely normal. Nobody's wage depends on your tip here, which is exactly why the service feels unhurried. Cards tap everywhere; carry $30-40 in pounds for markets and honesty boxes.

The rhythm of stops
We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.
How long the drive really takes
Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.
Booking and changes
A £180 deposit secures the dates and the balance is settled before departure. Changes more than 30 days out are usually free; inside 30 days it depends on whether we can refill the slot. The deposit is non-refundable, stated before you pay. If we are the ones who cannot deliver, we refund in full including the deposit.
What we will not do
We do not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission — we take none. We do not add unrequested items and charge for them, or recommend hotels we have not used. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive suits you better, we say so even when it costs us the booking.
