Scotland Golf Tours for Americans
Golf in Scotland — St Andrews, the Ballot & the Courses Beyond
Playing the Old Course is more achievable than most Americans believe — the ballot explained, the courses that rival it, and golf-day transport where your clubs ride in comfort too.
Cracking the Old Course
Three routes onto the Old Course: the daily ballot (enter online 48 hours ahead, roughly 25-40% success in shoulder season — far better odds than most assume); the singles queue (arrive at the starter's hut before dawn as a solo player — most days you'll get out); or booking a guaranteed package through St Andrews Links a year ahead. Green fee runs £320 in high season. Crucial context Americans miss: St Andrews Links is a public trust — this is not Augusta; the town owns its golf, and anyone can walk the course on Sundays when it closes for play.
Beyond St Andrews & The Golf-Trip Formula
The supporting cast rivals the star: Carnoustie (the toughest Open venue), North Berwick (the template links every US architect copies), Kingsbarns, Muirfield (book far ahead) and Cruden Bay. The winning trip formula: base in St Andrews or Edinburgh, play 4-5 rounds across a week, and hand the logistics to a driver — clubs travel flat in the Alphard's boot, tee times are never missed, and the non-golfing spouse gets a castle-and-whisky itinerary running in parallel. Post-round, the 19th holes here have 500 years of practice. Golf transport from £480/day per vehicle.
Scotland golf tours · St Andrews · Old Course ballot · 高尔夫之旅 · 圣安德鲁斯
The rhythm of stops
We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.
What we will not do
We do not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission — we take none. We do not add unrequested items and charge for them, or recommend hotels we have not used. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive suits you better, we say so even when it costs us the booking.
What language support actually means
Our chauffeur-guides speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English, from first enquiry to final drop-off. In Edinburgh you can manage in English. On a single-track Highland road when the weather turns, having someone explain the options in your own language is a different kind of comfort.
What the vehicle actually holds
The Alphard and Vellfire seat seven, but seven seats and seven suitcases are different problems. With the rear row up, the boot takes about four 26-inch cases — hence four guests with full luggage. Five or more with checked bags means a second vehicle, and we say so before you book rather than at the kerb.
