The run north
The A9 from the airport reaches Gleneagles in about 50 minutes and Pitlochry in around 80. The road crosses the Forth on the Queensferry Crossing, runs past Kinross and Loch Leven, then climbs steadily. Perth itself is roughly an hour. This is the same corridor that continues to Inverness, so a Perthshire stop sits naturally at the start of a longer Highland trip rather than as a detour from one.
Gleneagles and golf arrivals
Gleneagles has its own long private approach and a porte-cochère, so arrival is straightforward and luggage handling is done for you. The planning question is the same as any golf trip: bag count. Full tour bags plus suitcases for four players is often two cars rather than one, and it is far better to establish that when booking than at the resort entrance. Guests frequently combine the arrival transfer with a distillery or Highland day later in the stay, which we quote the same way.
Pitlochry, Dunkeld and the trees
Pitlochry is a Victorian resort town with a repertory theatre, a salmon ladder on the dam, and two distilleries within walking distance. Dunkeld, twenty minutes south, has a ruined cathedral on the Tay and the woods where the Birnam Oak still stands. This part of Perthshire markets itself as Big Tree Country with some justification — it holds several of the tallest trees in Britain, planted by Victorian landowners competing with each other. It makes an unusually good half-day stop on the way north.
Planning a Perthshire leg
- For Gleneagles, count golf bags as well as suitcases.
- Say whether Perthshire is the destination or a stop on the way north.
- Ask about a Dunkeld or Pitlochry break if you are continuing to Inverness.
- In winter, expect us to confirm A9 conditions the day before.
Frequently asked
How long to Gleneagles from the airport?
About 50 minutes on the A9. Pitlochry is around 80 minutes and Perth roughly an hour.
Can we stop at a distillery on the way?
Yes. Pitlochry has two within walking distance of the town, and stops are included within a booked transfer.
