What the Standard Visitor Visa Covers
For Mainland Chinese passport holders, the UK Standard Visitor Visa is the route for both tourism AND business visits — a common point of confusion (there's no separate 'business visa' for short trips). It permits: attending meetings, conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions; negotiating and signing contracts; site visits and fact-finding; and business-related training. It does NOT permit: taking up employment, being paid by a UK source, or running a business day-to-day. Cost ~£115 for 6 months; the 2-year, 5-year and 10-year multi-entry versions cost more but suit frequent business travellers (the per-trip cost drops sharply). Note: unlike HK/Taiwan/Singapore, Mainland passports do NOT use the ETA — that's for visa-free nationalities only.
Application, Documents & Avoiding Rejection
The application: online via gov.uk, then a VFS Global centre visit for biometrics (fingerprints, photo) — centres in major Chinese cities; allow 3-4 weeks (priority services faster). Key documents: passport, bank statements showing funds, employment/business proof, travel itinerary, accommodation, and for business — an invitation letter from the UK company and a letter from your employer stating the trip's purpose. Common rejection reasons to avoid: insufficient proven funds, unclear trip purpose, weak ties to China (immigration officers assess return-likelihood), and inconsistent documents.
