The efficient choice if you just want to get there. ② Plane — 1h20 flight from London airports, but add airport transfers, security and waiting and it's often no faster than the train door-to-door; only worth it for the cheapest fares. ③ The scenic drive — 7-8 hours direct, but nobody should drive it direct: the whole point is stopping. Why the Journey Can Be the Destination

Here's the insight most travellers miss: London to Edinburgh doesn't have to be dead transit time — it can be some of the trip's best sightseeing. On a private drive north, you can stop at the Lake District (Windermere, Beatrix Potter), Hadrian's Wall (the Roman frontier), and the Scottish Borders' abbeys — turning a 'transfer' into a memorable touring day (or two).
