What the Games Are

The Highland Games are traditional Scottish gatherings held across the Highlands (and beyond) through the summer, celebrating Scottish heritage, strength and culture. The iconic events: 'tossing the caber' (flipping a huge wooden pole end-over-end — the signature spectacle), the hammer throw, the stone put and the weight-over-the-bar; massed pipe bands (dozens of pipers and drummers together — spine-tingling); Highland dancing competitions; and tug-of-war. Many are also clan gatherings, with tartans, heritage tents and Scottish food and drink. Famous ones include the Braemar Gathering (attended by the Royal Family), the Cowal Highland Gathering (the largest), and dozens of smaller village games — often the most charming and authentic.
