The Town & the Rock

North Berwick does classic British seaside without the tack: two clean beaches bracketing a harbour, ice-cream and fish-and-chips institutions, and the Scottish Seabird Centre with live cameras on the star attraction — Bass Rock, the volcanic plug offshore that hosts 150,000 gannets, the largest colony of these ocean divers on Earth (the rock literally turns white in season, April-September). Seasonal boat trips circle it. Behind town, Berwick Law's conical hill is a 30-minute climb to a whale-jawbone arch and a coastline panorama.

Tantallon & the East Lothian Loop

Ten minutes east, Tantallon Castle is the underrated stunner: a vast red sandstone curtain wall on cliffs directly facing Bass Rock — the Douglas clan's fortress, besieged by three kings, and one of Scotland's most photogenic ruins with 5% of Edinburgh Castle's visitors. The full gentle-day loop: Rosslyn Chapel morning → North Berwick lunch and beach → Tantallon afternoon → back by 5pm.
