Built from 1446 by the St Clair family, Rosslyn packs more carving per square metre than any church in Britain: the 學徒之柱（Apprentice Pillar）— legend says the master mason murdered the apprentice who carved it better than he could; over 100 Green Men peering from the foliage; angels playing bagpipes; a danse macabre; and, most puzzling, carvings resembling maize and aloe — New World plants — decades before Columbus sailed, fuelling theories the St Clairs reached America first.
