The tram and the airport bus

The tram runs from a stop directly outside the terminal to St Andrew Square in about 35 minutes, and the airport bus covers a similar route with more stops. Both are inexpensive, frequent and entirely sensible if you are travelling light, arriving in daylight, and staying within a short walk of a city-centre stop. If you are one or two people with cabin bags and a New Town hotel, this is genuinely the best-value option and we will say so. The limitations appear with large cases, small children, late-night arrivals, mobility needs, or any address that is not near the line.

Rideshare and metered cars

Both exist at Edinburgh Airport and both work. The trade-offs are worth knowing rather than arguing about. Availability at 05:30 or after the last evening bank of arrivals is less certain than at midday. Pricing on rideshare platforms moves with demand, so a Friday evening or a festival arrival can cost a multiple of the same trip on a Tuesday. Neither option meets you inside the arrivals hall, and neither monitors your flight — a two-hour delay simply means you start the process again on landing, at whatever the price is then.

When a private chauffeur is genuinely worth it

The case is strongest when the arrival is awkward: a 23:40 landing with children asleep, four adults with six large cases, a first visit to Scotland by guests who do not speak English confidently, a business arrival where being met by name matters, or an onward leg to Fife or the Highlands where no public option is direct. It is also worth it when certainty has value — when the fare was agreed a month ago, the driver is inside the hall holding a board, and nothing about the arrival depends on an app, a queue or a surge multiplier at midnight.

Choosing honestly in four questions

  1. How much luggage, really? Two cabin bags point to the tram.
  2. What time does the flight land? After 22:30 or before 06:00 shifts the balance.
  3. Is the final address near a tram stop, or in Fife, the Borders or the Highlands?
  4. Does anyone in the party need to be met rather than to find their own way?

Frequently asked

Is the tram cheaper than a private transfer?

For one or two people travelling light, clearly yes, and we will say so. For four people with large cases the gap narrows considerably, because our fare is for the whole car.

Do you meet passengers inside the terminal?

Yes, inside the arrivals hall with a name board, which neither the tram nor a rideshare pickup offers.
