Distances and realistic timings
Edinburgh Airport to Inverness is about 155 miles on the A9, typically three to three and a half hours with one stop. Fort William is roughly 145 miles via Stirling and Glen Coe, allow three hours and a half. Aviemore sits at around 130 miles, close to three hours. These are honest door-to-door figures including a comfort break, not optimistic map estimates. The A9 is average-speed camera controlled along much of its length, which makes timings predictable but rules out making up lost time — so a late landing genuinely moves the arrival, and we plan for that openly.
The drive is part of the trip
North of Perth the A9 climbs through the Cairngorms at Drumochter, the highest point on any main road in Britain, and in winter that stretch carries real snow. Toward Fort William the road runs through Glen Coe, which is arguably the most dramatic landscape in Scotland and takes most first-time visitors by surprise. With a private car you can stop — at Killiecrankie, at the Glen Coe viewpoint, at a decent lunch stop in Pitlochry — rather than watching it pass a coach window. Most guests ask for at least one stop once they realise it costs nothing extra in a fixed-fare booking.
Winter conditions, said plainly
Between November and March the A9 over Drumochter and the road through Glen Coe can close or run under snow gates. We drive these roads year-round and we will tell you when a plan is unrealistic rather than setting off and hoping. If conditions are genuinely bad, the right answer is a different departure time or a different route, agreed with you in advance. Safety decisions are not negotiable, and no fixed fare is worth a bad call on a mountain pass in the dark.
