Between roughly 20:00 and 23:30, Edinburgh receives a concentrated run of European arrivals — Dublin, Amsterdam, Berlin, the Spanish and Italian leisure routes, and the domestic shuttles from London. Several can land within twenty minutes of each other, which fills border control and baggage reclaim simultaneously. Clearing the hall can take 35 to 45 minutes rather than the usual 20. That is not a problem in itself; it becomes one when your onward plan assumed the quiet-hour figure.

Hand luggage only changes everything

The single biggest variable at this hour is whether you checked a bag. Cabin-bag-only passengers on a domestic flight can be out of the hall in eight minutes; the same flight with hold luggage can take forty on a busy evening. A pre-booked car sidesteps all of it: the fare was agreed weeks earlier, the driver is inside the hall regardless of how long you took to clear, and there is no queue to join. For a 23:15 landing with children or luggage, this is the arrival where a fixed booking earns its keep most clearly.
