Connecting Through London to Edinburgh: What Changes on the Domestic Leg

You have already cleared the border

If you entered the UK at Heathrow or Gatwick, you cleared immigration and customs there. The Edinburgh leg is domestic, so on landing you walk straight from the aircraft to baggage reclaim with no passport queue at all. This is why domestic arrivals are so much faster: fifteen minutes with a checked bag, under ten without. It also means the arrivals hall crowd you join is thinner than an international bank, and finding your driver is easier.

Where your luggage really goes

If both legs were booked on one ticket, your bag is normally checked through to Edinburgh and appears on the Edinburgh belt. If you booked two separate tickets — a common way to save money on a long-haul plus a low-cost domestic hop — you almost certainly have to collect the bag in London, clear customs, and check in again. That is not a small detail: it is the single most common reason people miss the Edinburgh leg entirely. Allow at least three hours between separate tickets at Heathrow.

If you miss the connection

It happens, and it does not need to become a crisis on your end. We track the Edinburgh leg by flight number, so if you are rebooked onto a later service the pickup shifts with it — send us the new flight number when you have it and nothing else changes, including the fare. If the rebooking is onto the following morning, tell us and we simply move the booking; we do not charge for a delay that was never yours to control.

2. If separate, allow three hours or more at the London airport.
