Long and rigid is the real problem
Weight is rarely the constraint; shape is. A ski bag, a bike box, a double bass case or a golf travel bag cannot bend around a wheel arch the way a soft holdall can, so a car with generous stated capacity may still refuse a single rigid item. Cabin space and seat configuration matter too — folding a seat to take a bike box means one fewer passenger. This is why we ask for dimensions rather than a count, and why 'four people and some sports gear' is not enough information to quote against.
Winter sports and the Cairngorms
Skiers and snowboarders arriving for Cairngorm, Glenshee or the Lecht are a regular winter pattern, usually flying into Edinburgh and continuing north up the A9 to Aviemore. Ski bags are long but reasonably flat, so two or three usually travel fine alongside cases; four sets plus four suitcases generally does not. The onward drive is around three hours, and in the same conditions that make the skiing good the road may be under snow gates, so we confirm the route position the day before rather than assuming.
Instruments and things that must not move
Musicians arriving for concerts, competitions or Festival performances travel with instruments that are both fragile and irreplaceable, and the transport question is really a security question. Rigid cases travel in the cabin area rather than under other luggage, secured so nothing shifts on a corner, and the driver loads and unloads them personally rather than leaving it to the kerb. Tell us what you are carrying when you book, because it occasionally changes which vehicle we send.
Telling us what you are bringing
- Give dimensions for anything rigid, not just the number of items.
- Say how many suitcases travel alongside the oversized item.
- Flag anything fragile that must not be stacked under other bags.
- Ask early — oversized items sometimes decide the vehicle.
Frequently asked
Can you take a bike box?
Usually one, sometimes two, depending on how many passengers and cases travel with it. Send the box dimensions and we will confirm.
Do you drive on to the ski areas?
Yes — Aviemore and the Cairngorms are about three hours north on the A9, quoted as one fixed figure including stops.
