Edinburgh Airport to East Lothian: North Berwick, Gullane and the Golf Coast

The coast road east

The route skirts Edinburgh on the bypass then runs east on the A1, leaving for Gullane and North Berwick on the coast roads. Gullane is around 40 minutes from the airport, North Berwick about 45, Dunbar closer to 55. Once off the A1 the roads run through farmland with the Firth of Forth on your left and the Bass Rock offshore — a volcanic plug white with the largest northern gannet colony in the world, which is visible for most of the drive.

The golf, said plainly

Muirfield, Gullane, North Berwick and Archerfield sit within a few miles of each other, and Renaissance Club hosts the Scottish Open. Access and tee-time rules differ significantly between them, and some are considerably harder to get onto than visitors expect — that is a conversation for the club, not for us. What we handle is the logistics: bag counts, early tee times, and the fact that four players with full bags and suitcases usually need two cars, which is the same honest answer we give for St Andrews.

If you are not here for golf

North Berwick is a proper Victorian seaside town with two beaches, a harbour and a hill you can climb in twenty minutes for the whole Forth spread out below. Tantallon Castle stands on a cliff facing the Bass Rock, Dirleton has one of the prettiest village greens in Scotland, and Dunbar has the harbour where John Muir grew up. It is close enough to Edinburgh for a half-day and quiet enough not to feel like a tourist route.

Planning an East Lothian arrival

1. For golf, give bag and case counts, not just player numbers.
2. Confirm tee times with the club first — access rules vary a lot.
3. Say which town: Gullane, North Berwick and Dunbar are all different runs.
4. Ask for a Tantallon or Bass Rock viewpoint stop if you have time.
