Edinburgh Airport to the Fife Coast: Anstruther, Crail and the East Neuk

Getting round the coast

The route crosses the Queensferry Crossing and runs through Fife on the A92, then east on the coast road through Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail. Anstruther is around 90 minutes from the airport; St Andrews is twenty minutes beyond Crail, so the coast makes an obvious loop rather than an out-and-back. The villages are only a few minutes apart, which is why a private car works so much better here than public transport — the bus exists but it turns a two-hour circuit into a day.

What each village is for

Elie has the beach and a walk out to a lighthouse at low tide. St Monans has a fourteenth-century church standing almost in the sea and a restored windmill from the salt works. Pittenweem is the working harbour with the fish market and an artists' community. Anstruther has the fish bar people drive from Edinburgh for, and the boat to the Isle of May seabird colony in summer. Crail is the prettiest harbour of the lot and the one on every postcard. Seeing four in an afternoon is entirely normal.

Combining it with St Andrews

Because Crail is twenty minutes from St Andrews, the natural shape is airport to the East Neuk, along the coast, then into St Andrews at the end of the day — or the reverse if you have a tee time. Guests who came to Scotland for golf and had a spare afternoon frequently end up here, and it is consistently the part of the trip they did not expect to like as much as they did. Within a booked transfer the stops cost nothing extra.

Planning an East Neuk day

1. Say whether you want the coast first or St Andrews first.
2. Anstruther's fish bar has queues at peak times — go early or late.
3. For the Isle of May boat, book the sailing separately in advance.
4. Four villages in an afternoon is realistic; six is rushing it.
