What Transfers, What Doesn't

Transfers perfectly: left-side driving, roundabout instincts, long-distance stamina, and campervan culture (Scotland legalised wild camping — the NC500 is dotted with motorhomes). Doesn't transfer: width. The Great Ocean Road is a boulevard next to Highland single-tracks — one shared lane, passing places every few hundred metres, stone walls where your road shoulder should be, and sheep with zero road sense. Also new: the reversing etiquette (downhill driver reverses; nearest passing place wins), and 'road closed' meaning genuinely closed in winter. Aussie drivers cope better than Americans — but 'cope' and 'enjoy' are different words on day three of the NC500.

Keeping the Road-Trip Soul, Chauffeured

The road-trip soul is windows-down freedom, spontaneous stops and the route as the destination — none of which actually requires your hands on the wheel. A chauffeured NC500 or Highland loop keeps every element: you still stop at the deserted beach at Achmelvich on a whim, still detour for the sea-stack at Duncansby, still eat at the roadside seafood shack — except now everyone watches the scenery, the whisky tastings include the 'driver', and the single-track stress belongs to someone who does it daily. Four Aussies splitting a multi-day vehicle lands near campervan-hire money once fuel, insurance and pitches are counted. The road trip survives; the white knuckles don't. 微信/WhatsApp預約。
