What actually changes on the ground

The Fringe, the International Festival, the Book Festival and the Tattoo overlap through August. Streets around the Royal Mile, the Cowgate and George Square are closed or restricted; the Tattoo brings nightly road closures around the Castle esplanade; and the city's hotel stock is full at prices several times the February rate. Journey times from the airport that are 25 minutes in spring routinely become 45 to 60 minutes in August afternoons, and set-down points near Old Town venues move or disappear entirely.

Arriving with performers' equipment

August brings a particular kind of arrival: companies and performers landing with set pieces, instruments, lighting, costume trunks and boxes of print. This is a luggage question before it is a transport question, and vague estimates cause real problems at the kerb. Send an actual list — how many cases, their approximate dimensions, whether anything is rigid or oversized — and we will confirm what fits and whether the party needs a second vehicle. Venue access windows also matter: many Fringe venues only permit loading at specific hours.

Book earlier than feels necessary

August is the one month where availability genuinely runs out. Cars, hotels and restaurant tables are all committed weeks ahead, and a request made three days before an August arrival will often find nothing left at any price. If your dates are in August, treat the transfer as something to fix at the same time as the flight, not at the same time as packing.

Landing in August

1. Book the transfer when you book the flight, not later.
2. Send the venue name and its loading window, not just the postcode.
3. List equipment properly — count, size and anything oversized.
4. Expect journey times roughly double the off-season figure.
