What actually delays flights here in winter

The most common winter delay at Edinburgh is not snow on the runway but de-icing queues. On a frosty morning every departing aircraft needs treatment before it can move, and the de-icing stands become a bottleneck that pushes the whole morning bank back by twenty to sixty minutes. Fog is the second factor, particularly in the Forth valley in late autumn. Actual closures from snow are rare and usually brief. The practical implication is simple: winter departures are more likely to be late than winter arrivals, so the risk sits on your outbound day, not your arrival day.

Getting to the airport when the roads are icy

The airport road network — the A8, the M8 spur and the bypass — is gritted as a priority route, and in ordinary winter conditions it is clear. The part that catches people out is the last mile at the other end: a hotel on a steep Old Town lane, or a country house on an untreated single track in the Borders or Perthshire. That is where we add time, and occasionally where we suggest a different pickup point a short distance away rather than risk a car on sheet ice on a slope.

How we decide, and when we say no

We drive Scottish roads all winter and we treat a marginal call as a safety decision, not a commercial one. If Traffic Scotland has the A9 under snow gates, or the Met Office has an amber warning across the route, we will say so and propose a different departure time or route before the day rather than setting off and hoping. That occasionally means telling a client the plan does not work. It is a much better conversation than the alternative one.

Planning a winter trip

  1. Add a buffer to winter departures, not arrivals — de-icing hits outbound.
  2. Tell us if your accommodation is up a steep or unsurfaced lane.
  3. Expect us to re-confirm road conditions the day before a Highland leg.
  4. Check Traffic Scotland yourself the night before a long drive.

Frequently asked

Does the airport close when it snows?

Rarely, and usually only briefly. De-icing queues and fog cause far more winter delay at Edinburgh than closures do.

Will you still drive to the Highlands in January?

Yes, we drive these routes year-round — unless conditions make it genuinely unsafe, in which case we say so before the day rather than on the road.
