The story: England's 1754 Marriage Act demanded parental consent under 21 — but Scots law let anyone 16+ marry by simple declaration before witnesses. Gretna Green was the first village over the border on the coach road, and its blacksmith's shop the first building — so the smiths became 'anvil priests', hammering marriages into being as furious fathers galloped up the London road behind. The anvil struck to seal each union still stands in the Old Blacksmith's Shop (now a visitor centre and working wedding venue), and 'marrying over the anvil' remains the ritual: the celebrant's hammer-strike closes every ceremony.
