故事係咁：英格蘭1754年婚姻法規定21歲以下要父母同意——但蘇格蘭法律容許16歲以上任何人喺見證人面前宣誓即成婚。Gretna Green係馬車道過境後第一條村，鐵匠舖係第一座建築——於是鐵匠成為「鐵砧牧師」，喺暴怒嘅父親沿倫敦大道策馬追至之前，一錘一錘將婚姻打造出嚟。當年敲定每段姻緣嘅鐵砧仍然立喺老鐵匠舖（而家係遊客中心兼運作中嘅婚禮場地），「越砧成婚」依然係儀式核心：主禮人嘅一錘為每場典禮作結。
