How the Pub Works
The etiquette that trips up visitors: you order and pay AT THE BAR, not at your table (no waiter comes — this surprises everyone), then carry your drinks to your seat; for food, note your table number and order at the bar too (though gastropubs increasingly do table service — check). No tipping for drinks. Rounds culture: groups take turns buying 'a round' for everyone — it's polite to take your turn. What to drink: real ale/bitter (cask-conditioned, served cool not cold — the British classic), lager, cider (proper English cider is excellent), and of course whisky in Scotland. 'A pint' is the standard measure; 'a half' if you're pacing yourself. Non-drinkers: soft drinks, excellent tea and coffee, and increasingly good alcohol-free beers.
