Salisbury is 35 minutes away. The cathedral has the tallest spire in Britain at 123 metres, the best preserved of the four original Magna Carta copies, and the oldest working clock in the world. The medieval close around it is one of the most complete in England. Winchester is 20 minutes away and was the Anglo Saxon capital: the cathedral holds Jane Austen grave, the Great Hall displays the Round Table, and the high street is genuinely pleasant rather than a tourist strip. The New Forest is 25 minutes away, a former royal hunting ground where ponies, cattle and donkeys roam free across open heath, with Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and the Beaulieu motor museum inside it.

With five hours ashore, pick one and do it properly: Salisbury cathedral plus lunch, or Winchester plus the Great Hall, or a New Forest drive with a pub lunch and a pony stop. With seven hours, Salisbury plus Stonehenge works because they are only 20 minutes apart, which is the highest value pairing available from Southampton. With four hours or less, Winchester is the answer because it is closest and the walking is flat and short. Guests with mobility needs generally do best in the New Forest, where much of the pleasure is the drive itself and the stops are level.
