The Timing Maths

Southampton to central London is about 80 miles on the M3, typically 90 minutes but two hours or more if the M25 or the approach into London is congested. A return trip therefore costs three to four hours before you see anything. On a turnaround day this is straightforward because you have the whole day. On a port call it depends: a 07:00 to 18:00 call gives eleven hours and a real London day; anything under nine hours ashore and we recommend Winchester, Salisbury or Windsor instead and we will say so. We also plan the London portion so that the car drops and collects at fixed points rather than circling, because central London traffic and the congestion charge make a car a liability inside the city core.

The Highlights Day That Works

The shape we run: drop at Westminster for Big Ben, Parliament and Westminster Abbey from outside, walk to Horse Guards and Downing Street, then collect and drive past Buckingham Palace to a Covent Garden or Chinatown lunch. Afternoon options are a Tower of London visit with a pre booked timed ticket, or Tower Bridge and St Pauls exterior plus the South Bank walk, or Harrods and Bond Street for shopping. Then a firm departure by mid afternoon. Trying to add the British Museum, the London Eye and a Thames cruise to this is how people miss ships.
