Train times
The Jacobite steam train crosses roughly at 10:45 and 15:00 between late April and October. Times shift; we check the current timetable rather than rely on last year's.
Where to stand
The viewpoint walk from the visitor centre takes fifteen minutes uphill. Arrive thirty minutes before the train — the good spots fill and the path is slow with a crowd.
Off season
November to March the train does not run. The viaduct is still worth ten minutes if you are passing, but do not build the day around it.
What the vehicle actually holds
The Alphard and Vellfire seat seven, but seven seats and seven suitcases are different problems. With the rear row up, the boot takes about four 26-inch cases — hence four guests with full luggage. Five or more with checked bags means a second vehicle, and we say so before you book rather than at the kerb.
How weather changes the day
Four seasons in a day is not a joke here. We do not cancel for rain — we reorder. If Quiraing is clouded in we go to Neist Point and come back the next morning. That flexibility is the practical value of a private vehicle.
How long the drive really takes
Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.
