The Ports, North To South

Scotland: Invergordon reaches Loch Ness, the Highlands, Speyside whisky and Dunrobin Castle. Kirkwall covers Neolithic Orkney. Ullapool and Oban are small west coast calls with Assynt and Glencoe respectively. Portree gives a compressed Isle of Skye. Aberdeen reaches Royal Deeside and Dunnottar. Dundee has quayside museums and St Andrews. Leith, South Queensferry and Rosyth are the three Edinburgh approaches with very different usable times. Greenock covers Glasgow, Loch Lomond and Stirling. England: Southampton is the major turnaround port, reaching London, Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath, Salisbury, Winchester, the New Forest, Portsmouth, Oxford and the Cotswolds depending on how many hours you have.

Four Questions Before You Book

One: how many hours are you actually ashore? Subtract disembarkation, tendering if applicable, and at least an hour of return cushion from the printed call time. Two: how many people are travelling? Four or more usually makes a private vehicle cheaper per head than a ship excursion. Three: does anyone in the party have mobility, dietary, language or age related needs? If yes, a private car is not a luxury but the thing that makes the day possible. Four: is this a port call or a turnaround day?
