Edinburgh, St Andrews, Durham, Cambridge and Oxford in one week is a common plan for families comparing universities. These five stretch from Scotland to southern England, and a car is far more flexible than the train — most campuses aren't next to a station.
Open Days
Open days have fixed dates and fill up fast, so register in advance. We plan the route around your confirmed dates, not the other way round — first secure your open-day places, then we build the itinerary.
Visiting Outside Open Days
Most colleges open their public areas to visitors year-round. You'll see the quads and chapels, but not accommodation or teaching rooms. Some Cambridge and Oxford colleges close during exams in May and June, and some charge admission — check before you go.
Waiting
A campus visit usually takes two to four hours. The driver waits rather than leaving, so backpacks, coats and shopping can stay in the car — very practical for families seeing three universities in a day.
Business Delegations
Factory, research centre and university delegations are a regular arrangement. These visits usually require vehicle registrations and guest lists in advance; we confirm with the venue early, so nobody discovers on the day that they can't get through the gate.
What the driver-guide actually does
Driving is half of it. Our drivers are trained guides: they will explain the history and landscape if you want it, and stay quiet if you would rather look out of the window. Practical help means luggage, restaurant recommendations, ticket queues, and knowing which car park has space. We do not take commissions from shops or restaurants, which is why our recommendations are worth something.
Language support
English, Mandarin and Cantonese throughout — from the first enquiry to the final drop-off, not a translation app. In Edinburgh you can manage in English. On a single-track Highland road when the weather turns, having someone explain the options in your own language is a different kind of comfort.
What we will not do
We will not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission, add items you did not ask for and charge for them, or tell you a hotel is good if we have not used it. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive would genuinely be better value for you, or a small-group tour suits you more — we will say so, even when it costs us the booking.
