Choosing by Region
Scotch whisky is grouped by region, and knowing the regions makes choosing far easier. Speyside (e.g. Glenfiddich, Macallan, Glenlivet) tends to be smooth, fruity and honeyed — the safest and most popular gift. Islay (e.g. Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg) is heavily smoky and peaty, much loved by enthusiasts. The Highlands vary widely and are full-bodied; the Lowlands are lighter and grassy; Campbeltown is briny and complex. Distillery visitor shops often sell hand-filled or distillery-exclusive bottlings you can't buy elsewhere — souvenirs with real meaning. If unsure, taste first on a distillery tour or at a specialist shop on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, and ask staff to recommend by flavour rather than price alone.
Taking Whisky Home Legally
Two key points. First, forget airport tax refunds — since 1 January 2021 the UK has ended VAT refunds for tourists, so whisky bought in shops can't have VAT reclaimed; for duty-free prices, buy airside after security. Second, check China Customs' duty-free allowance before packing: the personal alcohol allowance is limited and excess may be taxed, so confirm the current limit rather than guessing. Wrap bottles well in checked luggage (liquid rules mean large bottles bought before security can't go in the cabin), or buy airside after security to carry them on. MegaSpace can route your private tour via Speyside or Islay-facing distilleries, wait while you taste and shop, and store bottles safely in the MPV between stops.
Buying Scotch whisky and taking it home to China — choose by region: Speyside for smooth, fruity styles (the top choice for gifts), Islay for smoky peat, the Highlands for full-bodied, the Lowlands for light, Campbeltown for a salty, maritime note. Distillery shops carry limited editions. Key point: the UK abolished tourist VAT refunds in 2021, so ignore old guides about reclaiming VAT; for duty-free prices, buy at the airport duty-free shops after security. Before taking bottles to China, check Chinese Customs personal alcohol allowances — amounts over the limit may be taxed. Pack full bottles securely in checked luggage.
