Long days, warmth and popular months
Summer is popular for good reason: the days are astonishingly long, with around 18 hours of daylight in the Highlands in June and lingering twilight (known locally as the "simmer dim"), so the far north barely gets dark at all. Temperatures are mild rather than hot — pleasantly warm on good days — but Scottish summers are still often wet and windy, so keep a waterproof jacket and layers in your bag even in July. It's the driest, warmest time for hiking, island-hopping and Skye, and the sea and lochs look their best. The trade-off is higher prices, busier roads and attractions, and the need to book accommodation and tours early, especially during the Edinburgh festivals in August.
Festivals, crowds and midges to watch out for
August is festival month: the Edinburgh Fringe, International Festival and Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo fill the capital with life, but hotels sell out and prices soar. Highland Games are held across the country through the summer. Two things to plan around: crowds at hotspots such as the Quiraing on Skye and Loch Ness, best visited early or in the evening; and midges — tiny biting insects at their worst in the Highlands from roughly late May to September on still, damp evenings. Private hire takes care of both: MegaSpace times your visits to avoid coach crowds, makes the most of the long daylight to see more, and provides a sealed, midge-free vehicle between stops, with a fixed price for the whole car even in popular months.
