Road 1 — the A87 classic (2h15): down Loch Ness's western shore, through Glen Shiel beneath the Five Sisters of Kintail, past 艾琳多南城堡（Eilean Donan）— the route with the icon, ideal if you haven't yet photographed Scotland's most famous castle. Road 2 — the Torridon wilderness (3h, via Achnasheen and Lochcarron): monumental red sandstone mountains, sea-loch bends and near-zero traffic — the road our drivers call the finest in Scotland that nobody takes. The play: arrive by one, leave by the other — a loop that turns transit into two of your trip's best drives.

Public Transport Truth & The Smart Move

The bus reality: Citylink 917 runs Inverness-Portree 3-4 times daily (~3h15, £25ish) — genuinely usable for reaching Portree, but you arrive stranded: Skye's sights spread across 50km with almost no local buses. The Kyle railway line (Inverness-Kyle of Lochalsh, 2h40) is one of Britain's great scenic journeys but ends across the bridge from the island proper.
