Invergordon is unusually well placed for whisky. Dalmore is at Alness, barely 10 minutes from the berth, and its sherry cask style suits drinkers coming from Asia. Glenmorangie at Tain is about 25 minutes north, with the tallest stills in Scotland and a well run visitor centre. Glen Ord at Muir of Ord is roughly 40 minutes south west and is the home of the Singleton. For a bigger day, Speyside opens up: Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Macallan are around two hours each way, which works for a call of nine hours or more but leaves little room for anything else. Our normal recommendation is two distilleries plus lunch, not three, because tastings run longer than people expect.
Buying, Shipping And Getting Back On Board
Two practical points that catch cruise passengers. First, alcohol brought back on board is usually held by the ship and returned on the final day, so buy for home rather than for the cabin, and keep the receipt. Distillery shops can ship internationally, which is often cheaper than paying excess baggage later. Second, tastings need a booking in the summer months and the popular slots go first, so tell us your call date early. Cask strength drams are generous, and the person driving must be the driver, which is exactly the point of a private car.
