Getting To Edinburgh, And Whether You Should

Rosyth is on the north shore of the Forth, next to the naval dockyard. Edinburgh is about 40 minutes by road across the Queensferry Crossing in normal traffic, longer at peak. It is a straightforward Edinburgh day and we run it often: timed castle ticket, Royal Mile downhill, lunch, museum or shopping, firm departure. But if your itinerary already includes an Edinburgh call, or if the group has been before, Fife is the better answer and almost nobody offers it. Rosyth is also a turnaround port for some sailings, in which case we do airport transfers instead, meeting you at Edinburgh Airport with a name board and taking luggage straight to the terminal.

The Fife Day Nobody Books

Fife is a small kingdom of fishing villages, golf and coastline. The East Neuk villages of Crail, Anstruther and Pittenweem have working harbours, crow stepped gables and the best fish and chips in Scotland, generally agreed to be at Anstruther. St Andrews is 90 minutes from Rosyth and delivers the Old Course, the cathedral ruins, the university where two future monarchs met, and a beach that appeared in Chariots of Fire. Closer to the port, Culross is a preserved seventeenth century burgh used as a filming location, and Dunfermline Abbey holds the grave of Robert the Bruce. Any of these makes a calmer, more distinctive shore day than a crowded Royal Mile in August.
