Leith is a working dock inside the city, so you step off the gangway and you are already in Edinburgh. Fifteen to twenty minutes to the Royal Mile, ten to the New Town. Compared with a tender call at South Queensferry or a transfer from Rosyth, this typically returns two extra usable hours to your day. That changes what is possible: a full Edinburgh morning plus a Highland afternoon, or a Stirling and Falkirk Wheel day, or St Andrews and the Fife coast, all of which are out of reach from a tender port. Leith itself deserves an hour. The Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed at Ocean Terminal, which is literally at the cruise berth, and it is one of the best value attractions in Scotland for a cruise passenger short on time. The Shore area has the old harbour front and several Michelin recognised restaurants. From there the classic day continues: Edinburgh Castle with a timed ticket, the Royal Mile downhill, Victoria Street, lunch, then Calton Hill or Dean Village for photographs. Groups wanting the Highlands can reach Glencoe only on very long calls, but Stirling, Loch Lomond and the Kelpies are all comfortable.
