Three Routes From The Granite City

Aberdeen South Harbour and the city berths put you close to the centre, which means no wasted transfer time. Route one, Royal Deeside: the A93 follows the Dee west past Crathes Castle with its yew topiary gardens to Balmoral, the royal family Highland residence, open to visitors from roughly April to early August when the family is not in residence. Route two, the coast: Dunnottar Castle at Stonehaven, 30 minutes south, a ruin on a sea stack that is arguably the most dramatic castle site in Britain. Route three, whisky: eastern Speyside distilleries are around 90 minutes inland. Most calls here are 08:00 to 18:00, which comfortably supports any one of the three plus lunch.

Balmoral Timing And The Dunnottar Walk

Two details that decide the day. Balmoral opening is seasonal and narrow, typically ending in early August before the royal residency, so a September cruise cannot visit and we redirect to Crathes or Braemar instead rather than driving you there to find it closed. Dunnottar requires a walk of about 15 minutes from the car park with a steep descent and a climb of many steps to enter the ruin. The clifftop view from the path is free and spectacular, so guests who cannot manage the steps still get the photograph. We tell you which stops involve real walking before you book, not on the day.
