Dunrobin at Golspie is the largest house in the northern Highlands and the seat of the Earls of Sutherland. It looks like a French chateau dropped onto a Scottish cliff, which photographs extremely well and reads instantly to visitors who do not want a history lecture. The drive north from Invergordon takes about 45 minutes along the coast, past Dornoch Firth. Inside there are 189 rooms of which a portion are open, the gardens run down towards the sea, and the falconry display in the garden happens twice daily in season and is the part children remember. A half day here leaves time for Dornoch village and its cathedral on the way back, or for a Glenmorangie stop at Tain.

Timing, Season And Accessibility

Dunrobin opens roughly April to October, which covers almost the whole Scottish cruise season, but the closing time moves earlier in the shoulder months, so we check the exact opening hours against your call date rather than assuming. The falconry display times are fixed, and if that is the priority we plan the day around them. The castle has stairs and the gardens involve a steep descent and climb, so for guests with limited mobility we plan a terrace level visit and use the vehicle to shorten walking. Tickets are best bought in advance in July and August. Your all aboard time governs the day, and we build in a 60 to 90 minute cushion as standard.
