Ships anchor in Oban Bay and tender passengers to the North Pier. Allow 45 minutes after arrival for the first tender and plan to be back 60 minutes before the last one, which usually leaves six to seven usable hours from a nine hour call. Inside that window the strongest option is Glencoe: 50 minutes north on the A85 and A82, past Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle on its promontory, into the glen for the Three Sisters viewpoint and the Glencoe visitor centre, then back via Loch Etive. That is roughly two and a half hours of driving with four stops. The alternative for a shorter call is local: Oban Distillery in the town centre, McCaigs Tower for the bay view, and the seafood.

Seafood, Whisky And The Tender Clock

Oban calls itself the Seafood Capital of Scotland and the claim holds up. The green seafood shack on the railway pier sells langoustines, scallops and oysters straight off the boats, eaten standing at the harbour rail, and it is a hundred metres from where the tender lands, which makes it the perfect last stop before returning. Oban Distillery is one of the oldest and smallest in Scotland and sits in the town centre, so a tour there costs you no driving time at all. Our rule at tender ports is simple: the last hour of the day stays inside walking distance of the pier, so a delay never becomes a crisis.
