Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is 25 minutes from Southampton and holds three things worth the trip. HMS Victory is Nelson flagship from Trafalgar in 1805, still in commission, and you walk the deck where he was shot. The Mary Rose was Henry VIII warship, sank in 1545, was raised in 1982 and is now displayed in a purpose built museum alongside thousands of objects preserved in the silt, which gives a picture of Tudor daily life nothing else matches. HMS Warrior 1860 was the first iron hulled armoured warship. A single ticket covers the site and three to four hours is a comfortable visit. The Spinnaker Tower nearby gives a Solent view and Gunwharf Quays has outlet shopping.

The honest answer for a cruise day: it requires a car ferry from Southampton or Portsmouth taking about an hour each way plus check in, so the return crossing alone eats three hours and the ferry timetable becomes a second all aboard deadline stacked on the first. We do it on turnaround days and on very long calls only.
