The single biggest improvement to a family shore day is cutting the itinerary in half. Children do not remember the fourth cathedral; they remember the pony that walked up to the car. So we build around one anchor experience plus one flexible stop, with a real lunch in between. Anchors that work near Southampton: the New Forest where ponies, donkeys and cattle roam free and children can see them from the roadside; Beaulieu with its motor museum, monorail and grounds; Marwell Zoo at 30 minutes; Portsmouth Historic Dockyard where they can climb aboard actual warships; and Windsor if the age suits, because a real castle with guards lands well for children over six.

The Practical Family Kit

Child seats and booster seats are required by law in the UK for children under 12 or under 135cm, and we fit them in advance at no charge if you tell us ages and heights when booking. A private car means the pram travels in the boot rather than being folded and carried, and it means an unscheduled toilet stop is not a negotiation with 45 other passengers. We keep the itinerary loose enough that a nap in the car is a feature rather than a disaster, and we plan lunch at 12:00 rather than 13:30 because hungry children end days early.
