The Season Month By Month
April and early May are quiet with long enough daylight and gardens at their best, but some attractions have shorter opening hours and a few open later in the month. June and July have the longest daylight, up to 18 hours in northern Scotland, along with the largest crowds and the highest prices. August is peak everywhere and Edinburgh is transformed by the Festival, which means the city is wonderful and completely full at the same time. September is arguably the best month: fewer visitors, warm colours, calm seas and full opening hours. October brings shorter days, more weather disruption at tender ports and some seasonal closures such as Balmoral and several Highland attractions.
What To Book And When
Booking order in practice. Six months out: nothing is urgent yet except Maeshowe on Orkney and special access sessions at Stonehenge. Three months out: book Edinburgh Castle, Stonehenge, Windsor, the Roman Baths and distillery tours for July and August dates, because these are the items that sell out and cannot be fixed on the day. Two months out: confirm the private car, particularly for Saturdays at Southampton and for multi vehicle groups. One month out: restaurant bookings for groups over six and any dietary requirement. One week out: we confirm the day sheet, terminal, driver and plate. The car is usually the easiest thing to arrange; the tickets are not.
