When and where

June to September, worst in July and August, and concentrated in the west Highlands near still water. Coastal breezes and cities are largely free of them.

Conditions

They need still, damp, overcast conditions. Any breeze above about 7mph grounds them entirely. Bright sun also suppresses them.

Midges — The Honest Version

What works

Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft, both sold locally. A head net for still evenings by water. They do not carry disease and the bites fade in a day.

How long the drive really takes

Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.

The rhythm of stops

We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.

What language support actually means

Our chauffeur-guides speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English, from first enquiry to final drop-off. In Edinburgh you can manage in English. On a single-track Highland road when the weather turns, having someone explain the options in your own language is a different kind of comfort.

What the vehicle actually holds

The Alphard and Vellfire seat seven, but seven seats and seven suitcases are different problems. With the rear row up, the boot takes about four 26-inch cases — hence four guests with full luggage. Five or more with checked bags means a second vehicle, and we say so before you book rather than at the kerb.
