When and where
June to September, worst in July and August, concentrated near still water in the west Highlands and around dusk. Edinburgh, Glasgow and breezy coasts are largely free of them. The east coast is far better than the west.
What brings them out
Still, damp, overcast conditions. Anything above about 7mph of wind grounds them entirely, and bright sun suppresses them too. The worst combination is a July evening, no wind, beside a loch.
What works
Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft, both sold in local pharmacies and supermarkets. A head net for still evenings by water — unglamorous but effective. Long sleeves and trousers beat shorts.
Keeping it in proportion
They carry no disease and bites fade within a day. You are unaffected in the vehicle, in restaurants or in hotels — it is only outdoor time around dusk that matters. Most guests find it less severe than expected.
How to avoid them
Come in May or September; or weight the itinerary east — Edinburgh, the Cairngorms, the east coast — rather than west; or simply accept them and carry repellent, which is what most locals do.
每日实际车程有几长

车辆实际载得多少
Toyota Alphard 和 Vellfire 是七座，但七个座位和七件行李是两回事。第三排立起那阵，尾箱大约放到四件 26 吋行李箱。所以我们说「最多四位客人连全套行李」——五位或以上有托运行李，我们会安排第二架车，不会勉强塞。

实际车程要几耐
地图估的时间在高地通常乐观三成。单线道要不停靠哪会车，夏天再加露营车，两个钟的路段实际接近三个钟。我们排行程用真实时间，所以我们的日程纸面上看起来短些——但不会做不完。
