Edinburgh's business geography
The financial district is around St Andrew Square and Lothian Road; tech firms cluster at Quartermile and CodeBase. The University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt are south of the centre. Drives between these take ten to twenty minutes, but can double at rush hour.
Parking
Parking in central Edinburgh is expensive and difficult, with many streets permit-only. This is the most practical value of a private car — you're dropped at the door, the driver parks, and you don't have to think about it.
August is different
During the Fringe in August, parts of the centre are closed and journey times double. We avoid closed areas, usually picking up at fixed points on the edge — a three-minute walk beats twenty minutes in traffic. For August business trips, allow 50% more time for each leg.
Where you can reach
Glasgow one hour, Dundee an hour and a half, Aberdeen two and a half hours, Newcastle two hours. All are doable as day trips. Manchester at four hours is worth an overnight stay.

If you're entertaining clients, we know which restaurants you can actually get a table at and which have quiet corners for talking. We take no commission — so we recommend what's genuinely good, not who pays us. A half-day whisky distillery trip is also popular, and with a driver you can join your guests in the tasting.
How long each driving day really is
Most legs run two to three hours of actual driving, broken by stops. The longest single day on the ten-day loop is around four hours, and we break it with a proper lunch rather than a service station. We stop roughly every ninety minutes — some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee. Highland roads need extra allowance: what the map calls two hours is closer to three.
Why the route runs in this order
Geography decides the order, and fighting it wastes days. From Edinburgh the sensible flow is south through York and Manchester, down to Cambridge and London, then north again via the Lake District. You never double back, each day stays under four hours, and you finish in Edinburgh — flying home from the airport you arrived at rather than buying a one-way back to London.
What we will not do
We will not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission, add items you did not ask for and charge for them, or tell you a hotel is good if we have not used it. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive would genuinely be better value for you, or a small-group tour suits you more — we will say so, even when it costs us the booking.
