Typical Routes and Times
Edinburgh → Manchester about four hours; Manchester → Birmingham about two hours; Birmingham → London about two and a half hours. All timed outside rush hour. With one city a day, five days covers Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and London, departing from Heathrow.
Why Not Fly Domestically
Edinburgh to London is an hour and a half by air, which sounds much faster. But in reality: getting to the airport, arriving two hours early, security, waiting to board, flying, collecting bags and getting from the airport into town. Door to door is usually five to six hours — not as different from driving as you'd think, and you can't work continuously for those five hours.
Handling Luggage
The car carries your luggage: check out and go straight to your meeting, leaving your bags in the car. In the evening at your new hotel, the driver helps take them up. On a five-day trip with three hotels, not dragging suitcases around makes a real difference.
When Plans Change
Business trips always change. Meetings overrun, the other side reschedules, you want to add a stop — just tell the driver, with no rebooking or calling customer service. That's the most practical value of a dedicated arrangement.
Teams of More Than Four
Each vehicle takes four guests with luggage. A team of eight needs two vehicles, which we coordinate as a convoy — one schedule, one point of contact, not two separate bookings. Two vehicles also mean the team can split up as needed and regroup for dinner.
How long each driving day really is
Most legs run two to three hours of actual driving, broken by stops. The longest single day on the ten-day loop is around four hours, and we break it with a proper lunch rather than a service station. We stop roughly every ninety minutes — some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee. Highland roads need extra allowance: what the map calls two hours is closer to three.
Why the route runs in this order
Geography decides the order, and fighting it wastes days. From Edinburgh the sensible flow is south through York and Manchester, down to Cambridge and London, then north again via the Lake District. You never double back, each day stays under four hours, and you finish in Edinburgh — flying home from the airport you arrived at rather than buying a one-way back to London.
What we will not do
We will not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission, add items you did not ask for and charge for them, or tell you a hotel is good if we have not used it. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive would genuinely be better value for you, or a small-group tour suits you more — we will say so, even when it costs us the booking.
