A Warrior's Instrument
The Great Highland Bagpipe(蘇格蘭高地風笛)was historically an instrument of war — pipers led Highland clans into battle, and after the 1745 Jacobite rising the instrument was effectively suppressed along with tartan. A single piper produces sound through a chanter and three drones, powered by a bag squeezed under the arm — it never stops for breath, which is exactly what makes the sound so haunting. Today over 5,000 pipers compete worldwide, and the World Pipe Band Championships happen every August in Glasgow.
Where to Hear & Try the Pipes
In Edinburgh you'll hear street pipers daily on the Royal Mile and Princes Street — free and atmospheric. For the full spectacle, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (August, book months ahead) masses hundreds of pipers against the castle backdrop. In the Highlands, summer Highland Games feature piping competitions in village settings. Want to try? The National Piping Centre in Glasgow offers beginner taster sessions.
