After Culloden in 1746 the wearing of tartan was banned for nearly 40 years — which is partly why it became such a powerful symbol of Scottish identity. A traditional kilt uses 8 yards of pure wool and is always worn by men on formal occasions: weddings, graduations and Highland Games.
