How Tartan Works
每個格仔紋(tartan)belongs to a clan, region or institution — the pattern (called a 'sett') is registered in the Scottish Register of Tartans, which now holds over 7,000 designs. MacDonald, Campbell, Royal Stewart and Black Watch are the most famous. After Culloden in 1746 the wearing of tartan was banned for nearly 40 years — which is partly why it became such a powerful symbol of Scottish identity. A traditional kilt uses 8 yards of pure wool and is always worn by men on formal occasions: weddings, graduations and Highland Games.
Where to Buy & What It Costs
In Edinburgh, the Royal Mile is lined with tartan shops — but quality varies enormously. For the real thing: Kinloch Anderson (royal warrant holders), Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers, or 21st Century Kilts for modern styles. A proper made-to-measure wool kilt costs £450-700; a quality off-the-peg one £150-300; cashmere tartan scarves make superb gifts at £40-90. Avoid the £30 'kilts' — they're costumes, not clothing. Many shops can identify 'your' tartan if you have Scottish ancestry, or you can simply choose the pattern you love.
