The drink-drive limit is lower here
Scotland's drink-drive limit is lower than England's, and lower than most visitors assume. In practice a single dram at a distillery can put a driver over it, and the limit applies the following morning as well — a heavy evening does not clear by breakfast. Visitors from countries with more permissive limits are the group most often caught out. This is not a marketing argument for hiring a car with a driver; it is the reason distillery tours offer drivers' samples in take-home bottles rather than pouring them.
Where the distilleries actually are
From Edinburgh the practical clusters are Speyside around three hours north, Highland Perthshire about ninety minutes, the Lowland distilleries within an hour, and Islay which needs a ferry and an overnight. Most are on single-track or minor roads with no bus service and limited mobile signal. A day covering three distilleries is comfortable with a car and effectively impossible without one, which is why the arrival transfer and the whisky day are usually the same booking.
Booking tastings and shipping bottles
Distillery tours and tastings book out weeks ahead in summer, and the more interesting warehouse and cask sessions go first — reserve those directly with the distillery before you finalise the driving day, then tell us the times. On the way home, remember airline liquid rules: bottles must go in hold luggage, and many distilleries will ship internationally for you, which is usually easier than carrying six bottles through three airports.
Planning a whisky trip from the airport
- Book the distillery tours first — the good sessions go weeks ahead.
- Send us the confirmed times and we build the driving day around them.
- Three distilleries in a day is comfortable; five is not.
- Ask the distillery about shipping rather than carrying bottles home.
Frequently asked
Can I taste at every distillery if you are driving?
Yes — that is the point. The driver does not drink, and Scotland's limit is low enough that one dram can put a driver over it.
How many distilleries fit in a day?
Three is comfortable with travel time between them. Speyside is about three hours north, so that cluster usually needs an overnight.
