The Tender Is The Real Constraint
South Queensferry is an anchorage rather than a berth, so passengers come ashore by tender. That changes the arithmetic. The first tender is often 45 to 60 minutes after the stated arrival time, and the last tender back is typically 30 to 60 minutes before the all aboard time, so a stated nine hour call can become seven usable hours. Tender operations are also weather dependent in the Forth and can be delayed or, rarely, cancelled. We plan from the last tender backwards, not from the all aboard time, and we meet you at the Hawes Pier landing point rather than a car park you have to find. If tendering runs late, the itinerary compresses on our side, not yours.
The Edinburgh Day And The Bridges
Central Edinburgh is about 30 minutes from Hawes Pier, which makes this the most convenient Edinburgh cruise access of the three Forth ports. A comfortable day: Edinburgh Castle on a timed morning ticket, the Royal Mile walked downhill, lunch, then either the National Museum, the Palace of Holyroodhouse or Princes Street shopping. Coming back, the Forth Bridge is worth ten minutes on its own. The 1890 cantilever railway bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the viewpoint at South Queensferry with all three bridges in one frame is the photograph most guests actually want. If your group prefers countryside, Rosslyn Chapel is 40 minutes away and pairs well with a half day in town.
