The Six Hour Skye
Portree is a tender call, so a nine hour anchorage usually gives six to seven hours ashore. Skye is much larger than it looks and the roads are slow, so the mistake is trying to see the whole island. The route that works from Portree: north on the A855 to the Old Man of Storr viewpoint, 20 minutes away, then Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls, then the Quiraing road for the most dramatic landscape on the island, then back through Uig and down to Portree. That is a compact northern loop of about three hours driving with four stops, and it leaves margin. The Fairy Pools and Neist Point are both over an hour each way and we advise against them on a tender day.
When The Tender Is Cancelled
Portree Bay is exposed and Skye weather changes fast. Tender operations here are cancelled more often than at most Scottish ports, sometimes with the ship substituting a different call at short notice. Two practical consequences. First, book a private car that does not charge you for a weather cancellation outside your control, and confirm that in writing before you pay. Second, if the tender is delayed by an hour, the plan has to shrink, so we agree the priority stop in advance: if we only get one, it is the Quiraing for scenery or Dunvegan Castle for a wet day indoors. We watch the ship movements on the morning of the call and message you before you even board the tender.
