Designing Around Walking, Not Sights
The usual mistake is choosing sights first and discovering the walking afterwards. We reverse it. Tell us the honest walking range, and we plan stops that fit. Flat and short from the car: Winchester cathedral close, Salisbury cathedral, the New Forest viewpoints, Beaulieu, Bath city centre and the Roman Baths which have lift access to most levels. Difficult: Stonehenge involves a shuttle and a walk on uneven grass, Windsor Castle has a long approach and stairs in the State Apartments, Portsmouth ships have steep ladders and high door sills, and Cotswold villages have cobbles. We say which is which before booking, not on the day, and we are happy to talk you out of a stop that will not work.
The Practical Details That Matter
A private vehicle solves problems a coach cannot. The car goes to the door and waits, so the walking is the sight itself rather than the car park. We stop for the toilet whenever needed rather than at scheduled intervals. The itinerary has a rest built in, usually a long seated lunch in the middle rather than a rushed one. A Toyota Alphard has a lower step in height than most MPVs and captain seats with armrests, which matters for hips and knees, and there is space for a folding wheelchair or a walking frame. Tell us in advance about oxygen, medication timing or dialysis schedules. The driver speaks Mandarin and Cantonese, so a family member does not have to interpret all day.
