Dover Castle
Dover Castle is ten minutes from the terminal and is the largest castle in England. What makes it unusual is the layering: a Roman lighthouse from the first century stands in the grounds, the Norman great tower dates from the 1180s and has been refurnished as it would have looked for Henry II, and beneath the whole site run the wartime tunnels from which the Dunkirk evacuation was directed in 1940. The tunnel tours are guided and timed, and they are the part most guests remember. Two to three hours covers the site properly. The views from the walls take in the harbour, the ferries and on a clear day the coast of France 21 miles away.
The Cliffs And A Short Loop
The White Cliffs visitor centre is five minutes further and the clifftop path runs east towards the South Foreland Lighthouse, about 45 minutes walk each way on a broad level path, or a ten minute stroll to the first viewpoint if walking is limited. The cliffs are chalk and they are genuinely white, which surprises people who assume it is a figure of speech. A neat short loop for a five hour call: castle first at opening, cliff viewpoint and a coastal photo stop, lunch in Deal which is 20 minutes up the coast and has a Tudor castle by the shingle beach, then back. Nothing on this plan is more than 25 minutes from the berth, so a delayed tender or a late start does not break it.
