The Numbers

Dover to central London is about 75 miles, typically two hours via the M20 and A2 but longer when the M25 is congested, which it frequently is. A return trip therefore consumes four to five hours. With a 07:00 to 19:00 call you have twelve hours and London is genuinely worthwhile. With ten hours ashore it is tight but workable as a highlights day. With eight hours or less, four to five hours of driving to get three hours in London is a poor trade and we say so. Dover is also affected by port traffic on ferry heavy days, so the first 30 minutes of the drive can be slower than the map suggests. We build the plan from the all aboard time backwards and keep a 90 minute cushion on London days rather than the usual 60.

What A London Day From Dover Looks Like

Because the driving is long, the London portion must be tight. We drop at Westminster for Big Ben, Parliament and Westminster Abbey, walk to Horse Guards and Downing Street, collect and pass Buckingham Palace, then lunch in Chinatown or Covent Garden. One afternoon anchor only: the Tower of London with a pre booked timed ticket, or Tower Bridge with the South Bank walk, or Harrods and Oxford Street. Then a firm departure. That is two anchors, one meal and a set of photo stops, which is the honest capacity. Adding the British Museum or a river cruise is how people end up racing the clock on the M20, and we will not build a plan that depends on nothing going wrong.
