Walking Distance Value
Liverpool Cruise Terminal sits at the Pier Head beside the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building, collectively the Three Graces. The Albert Dock is a five minute walk with the Tate Liverpool, the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum, all free. The Beatles Story is in the same complex. This means a bad weather day, a short call or a group with limited mobility can have a complete day without a long drive, which is rare. For those with more time, the two cathedrals sit at either end of Hope Street, one Gothic and one modernist, and both are striking.
The Beatles Route
The driving part of a Liverpool day is the Beatles route through the suburbs, which needs a car because the sites are spread across several miles. Penny Lane and the barber shop, Strawberry Field with its red gates, St Peter Church hall in Woolton where Lennon met McCartney in 1957, and the childhood homes: Mendips where Lennon lived with his aunt, and 20 Forthlin Road where McCartney lived, both owned by the National Trust and entered only on a booked minibus tour which must be reserved well ahead. In town, the Cavern Club on Mathew Street still operates. Allow three hours for the suburban route and book National Trust entry early if the interiors matter to you.
